Globe publishes industry’s first integrated financial and sustainability report

Globe Telecom pioneers another milestone in the Philippine telecommunications industry with the first Annual Report that integrates its financial performance, corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives and sustainability programs in 2010.

With commitment as the theme for its 2010 Annual Report, Globe showcased how it is helping enrich the lives of its subscribers, communities, and investors through its products, services and programs. The report came with a free Globe prepaid SIM, another first for the industry, to provide shareholders an opportunity to experience and enjoy its suite of innovative and relevant services. In keeping with the company’s mission of putting its customers first, the 2010 Annual Report also included feedback from actual Globe subscribers. Feedback came in various forms – suggestions, recommendations and appraisals on how Globe services enhanced their personal lives and businesses.

On the other hand, the CSR and sustainability report documented its compliance to the global practice of integrating socially-responsible practices in its business operations. The report adhered to the guidelines of the internationally-recognized Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G3 standard. GRI is the most accepted international reporting framework applicable to corporations of any size, type or location. It sets the standard on which organizations shall measure their economic, environmental, and social performance.

The company’s sustainability report is a self-declared B level, the scope of which has been determined by available data and metrics tracked by different customer facing units and business enabling groups.

“We have achieved significant milestones this past year despite the challenges we faced. Apart from gaining momentum in our core businesses and growing our subscriber base, we have continued to practice responsible corporate citizenship and ensured that our programs have the necessary support for long-term commitment and engagement, including care for the environment, entrepreneurship, youth development and disaster response,” said Ernest Cu, Globe President and CEO. “We are very pleased to be on top of our game with the publication of this integrated Annual Report. It only goes to show that Globe remains committed to the policies of corporate transparency and disclosure without sacrificing creativity and quality of content.”

To sustain the level of engagement and understanding about the report, readers were introduced to another innovation with an online pop quiz which can be accessed via http://bit.ly/TheGlobeQuiz. The online quiz has 4 questions whose answers were found from the report. Five lucky respondents who answer the questions correctly will get the chance to win Globe Tattoo sticks with free P300 load as tokens.

After pioneering 2G and 3G technologies in the Philippines Globe showcases speed and reliability of 4G mobile technology

After pioneering 2G and 3G technologies in the Philippines
Globe showcases speed and reliability of 4G mobile technology

Globe Telecom conducted a live speed test demonstration of its 4G mobile technology, using the global standard HSPA+ or Evolved High-Speed Packet Access at its initial rollout phase. This followed after the company has announced that the technology is already available in 19 sites in Metro Manila, covering Marikina, Quezon City, Makati, Pasay, Las Pinas, Taguig and the City of Manila.

During the live demo, a Globe 4G HSPA+-powered broadband dongle was speed tested simultaneously with four other dongles – a regular Globe Tattoo stick (2G), a Globe SuperStick (3G) and its two competitor brands. In the speed test, the broadband stick running on 4G HSPA+ bested its competitors after registering a download speed of 8.55Mbps and an upload speed of 1.02Mbps. Its 2G and 3G-powered sticks also showed better and improved performance in download and upload speeds after being used in a 4G-powered site, surpassing existing speeds. This showed speed and reliability of 4G HSPA+ amidst simultaneous broadband sticks being tested which required more network bandwidth to work.

Globe Portfolio Management Head Joanna Africa also showcased the various functionalities of Samsung Galaxy S2, the latest 4G-capable device that Globe will exclusively offer to its subscribers in the next few weeks to allow them to fully enjoy the 4G experience on their handsets. With this device, subscribers are treated to better and more stable data connections that will result to high-speed web browsing and faster video streaming and downloads.

“The increasing data usage is driving the need for more capacity. Since we are committed to providing quality services to our subscribers, we have proactively responded to the call by deploying new technologies that will upgrade and enhance their experience with us,” said Peter Bithos, Senior Advisor for Consumer Business of Globe Telecom. “The commercial rollout of our 4G mobile technology testifies to this commitment of bringing the most up-to-date technologies and services to our customers.”

Now considered as a mainstream technology, HSPA+ is the most relevant 4G technology available in the market today. Current subscribers using 3G-enabled mobile phones and broadband dongles are already benefiting from the initial rollout with improved call, text and data experience. Subscribers based in the pilot HSPA+ areas can expect to experience the real 4G technology with new 4G-enabled devices and applications coming very soon only from Globe.

Nokia announces Q1 2011 net sales of EUR 10.4 billion

Nokia announces Q1 2011 net sales of EUR 10.4 billion

Nokia reports its first quarter 2011 net sales of EUR 10.4 billion, which showed a 9% increase compared with EUR 9.5 billion in first quarter of 2010.

Devices & Services
Devices & Services recorded net sales of EUR 7.1 billion, up by 6% year-on-year resulting primarily from higher average selling price (ASPs).

Services net sales contributed to the total Devices & Services net sales with EUR 211 million in the first quarter 2011 compared with EUR 148 million in the first quarter 2010 and EUR 201 million in the fourth quarter 2010.

NAVTEQ
NAVTEQ reported net sales of EUR 232 million. The 23 % increase year-on-year is primarily driven by improved sales of map licenses to mobile device customers as well as improved vehicle sales and higher navigation uptake rates in the automotive industry offset to some extent by lower personal navigation devices (PNDs) sales.

Nokia Siemens Networks
Net Sales of Siemens Networks increased by 17% to EUR 3.2 billion, year-on-year reflected by the growth in both the product and services businesses in most regions. Nokia Siemens Networks also reported gross profit increased by 8% to EUR 847 million compared with EUR 782 million in the first quarter 2010.

Operating Highlights
The first quarter of 2011 includes many significant operations and milestones for the company. Nokia announced a new strategy, including changes to its leadership and operational structure designed to accelerate the speed of execution in an intensely competitive mobile products market.

Stephen Elop, Nokia CEO said, "In the first quarter of 2011, we shifted from defining our strategy to executing our strategy. On this front, I am pleased to report that we signed our definitive agreement with Microsoft and already our product design and engineering work is well under way. We are fully focused on delivering the needed accountability, speed and results to positively drive our future financial performance."

The main elements of the new strategy were: the broad strategic partnership with Microsoft to build a new global ecosystem for smartphones; bringing affordable mobile products that enable efficient web browsing and access to other apps and innovations; and making MeeGo an open-source mobile operating system project.

The Nokia Leadership Team replaced the Group Executive Board. And the new operational structure features two distinct business units in Devices & Services business: Smart Devices and Mobile Phones, focusing on Nokia's key business areas: smartphones and mass-market mobile phones.

Nokia also announced several new mobile phones: Nokia X1-00, an affordable Series 30-based, music-centric mobile phone and the Nokia E6 and Nokia X7, two new smartphones aimed at business people and entertainment enthusiasts respectively. They are the first Nokia smartphones shipping with Symbian Anna, the latest version of the Symbian software featuring new icons and usability enhancements. Shipments of the Nokia E7, a business smartphone featuring the Nokia ClearBlack technology also started.

Nokia continued to develop its Ovi services. During the first quarter 2011, downloads of applications and content on Ovi Store reached up to 5 million a day. Increased demand for apps from the approximate 200-million-strong Symbian consumer base has seen the Ovi Store catalog grow to more than 40,000 apps, with about 1,000 added per week.

Nokia Outlook
Following a solid first quarter, Nokia expects Devices & Services net sales to be between EUR 6.1 billion and EUR 6.6 billion, and its non-IFRS operating margin in Devices & Services to be between 6% and 9% in the second quarter 2011. Nokia Siemens Networks’ net sales target is between EUR 3.2 billion and EUR 3.5 billion.

About Nokia
At Nokia, we are committed to connecting people. We combine advanced technology with personalized services that enable people to stay close to what matters to them. Every day, more than 1.3 billion people connect to one another with a Nokia device – from mobile phones to advanced smartphones and high-performance mobile computers. Globe, SingTel build a home for underprivileged residents of Bantayan Island

Press Release

Globe, SingTel build a home for underprivileged
residents of Bantayan Island

Globe and SingTel volunteers painstakingly build a house for impoverished families in Bantayan Island, Cebu through the Gawad Kalinga Bayani Challenge 2011

Unmindful of the fatigue and scorching heat, volunteers from Globe Telecom and its shareholder Singapore Telecommunication Limited (SingTel) willingly mixed cement, stacked hollow blocks, made steel and wall frames, and did a host of other construction jobs just to provide a home for one of Bantayan Island’s marginalized families.

Ten volunteers from Globe, 12 from SingTel and another 10 from the Globe Gawad Kalinga sponsored village in Bagong Silang, Caloocan, traveled to far-flung Bantayan to participate in the Gawad Kalinga Bayani Challenge 2011 in Madridejos town. They joined over 1,700 volunteers from 27 provinces and three countries – USA, Australia, and Singapore, in giving a better life to residents of the island.

With its pristine shores and crystal clear blue waters, Bantayan has become one of the most popular vacation spots in Cebu province. However, behind its beauty is a backdrop of poverty where people, mostly fisher folks, continue to live a hand-to-mouth existence. This prompted GK to hold the annual Bayani Challenge in Bantayan.

For the GK Bayani Challenge 2011, 32 teams engaged in various activities such as building of homes, schools and farms; island greening; health mission; and feeding program and sports clinic for children.

Billy Tan, head of the SingTel delegation, remained undaunted by the task despite the bruises he received while clearing the area and building the house. Although Billy was a first time GK volunteer without any construction experience, the 35-year old consultant expects to join future Bayani Challenges which he said gave him not only a sense of fulfillment but also a feeling of camaraderie with other volunteers.

Team Globe leader and civil engineer Dante Rosello, on the other hand, is a regular volunteer. Rosello is always willing to help the less fortunate, having experienced financial difficulties himself during his growing up years.

Even Rommel Alido, a resident of Globe GK Village in Bagong Silang, makes it a point to volunteer every time his help is needed as a way of giving back to the organization which helped him and his family acquire a new home after their house was burned in 1985.

This was the fifth time for Globe employees to join the GK Bayani Challenge, believing that doing volunteer work for the needy is a way to achieve a work-life balance.

Diverse cable systems achieve business continuity Enterprise customers benefit from latest cable investments of Globe

PRESS RELEASE

Diverse cable systems achieve business continuity
Enterprise customers benefit from latest cable investments of Globe

Having a solid Business Continuity Program in place to ensure quick crisis recovery and its investment in various submarine cable systems enables Globe to provide redundant and reliable connections to customers, especially enterprise clients who account for the bulk of international traffic. Network resiliency is critical to large industries to ensure uninterrupted operations and 24x7 connectivity.

Among the latest cable links of Globe are the Unity Cable System that was activated in the third quarter of last year and the Tata Global Network-Intra Asia Cable System (TGN-IA) that started serving enterprise customers in 2009. The Unity Cable System is a Trans-Pacific cable that runs a span of 9,620 kilometers between Japan and the US. It has one of the lowest latencies across the Pacific and provides direct connections for internet traffic between Asia and the U.S. It has 960Gbps or a total of 96 10G wavelengths capacity making more bandwidth available to businesses.

TGN-IA is a direct, point-to-point and express optical fiber submarine cable. It directly links the Philippines to Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan and Vietnam. Unity and TGN-IA complement other Globe investments such as the TGN-Pacific Cable, Asia Pacific Cable Network 2 (APCN2), and City to City (C2C) cable network. Other submarine cable systems that Globe utilizes are South East Asia-Middle East-Western Europe Cable Network 3 (SMW3) and East Asia Crossing, Japan-U.S. Cable Network (JUCN), China-U.S. Cable Network (CUCN).

“Given our diverse portfolio of cable systems and network paths, we are able to provide our customers with superior, uninterrupted connections and significantly lessen the impact of service disruptions. We have the capacity to immediately restore traffic and we also deliver 24x7 technical support,” said Jesus C. Romero, Head of Enterprise Segments at Globe Business.

The recent Japan quake, which affected five submarine cable systems, had very minimal impact to Globe customers. Globe delivered stable connectivity to the US through the Unity Cable System and TGN-IA, which provided the capacity needed to reroute affected circuits. Enterprise customers were able to benefit from the readily available alternative links that Globe has in cases of service disruption. Thus, businesses had enough capacity and experienced continuous data and Internet connections during the earthquake.

“Enterprise customers are assured that we are ready and prepared. With our diverse Internet Protocol (IP) infrastructure and submarine cable systems, we were able to serve with ease both existing and new requirements for capacity when the earthquake happened. When the earthquake struck, Globe’s international network rerouted all service immediately. We were able to restore 100 percent of all voice and data services. Moreover, no traffic congestion was experienced on IP connectivity and on all international private networks,” explained Romero.

The IP infrastructure of Globe is linked to multiple peers both globally and locally making sure that enterprises experience the best route to access content and reach destinations across the internet. Globe has more than 100Gbps IP port capacity that ensures customers of business continuity and seamless flow of traffic anywhere in the Philippines and beyond.

Globe improves mobile network quality

PRESS RELEASE
24 April 2011

Globe improves mobile network quality
Makes significant investment on quality and capacity upgrade

Globe Telecom announced that it is investing US$500-million in the Philippines this year. A significant portion of this investment will be allocated to improve the quality and capacity of its mobile network infrastructure throughout the country.

Network quality will be a top priority for Globe this year. As part of its network transformation program, the company is making one of its biggest network investments in quality and capacity to date, where the significant amount will be used for capacity build up, network modernization, and optimization. These upgrades in the network systems are expected to provide better subscriber experience in call, text, and data services for its 2G, 3G and 4G customers.

In line with this major investment, Globe earlier announced a major expansion of its current 4G footprint with the country’s first commercial rollout of 4G mobile technology. At its initial phase, Globe utilized the global standard HSPA+ or Evolved High-Speed Packet Access for its 4G mobile network. Complementing the company’s existing 4G WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) network, HSPA+ is a 4G wireless, mobile, high speed broadband technology that allows for peak theoretical download speeds of up to 21 Mbps with upgradeability for 84Mbps. Under the Globe HSPA+ network, subscribers are expected to enjoy browsing at a typical speed of 4-6 Mbps with even faster peak speeds.

“Our customers are looking for better network quality, and this is what we are giving them. We are making a substantial investment in our network to improve the quality of our services to our subscribers. Certainly, the network on which our services are delivered play a pivotal role in achieving superior customer experience. By continuously enhancing our network facilities and operations, our subscribers will enjoy better quality and greater reliability for calls, text messaging, and data services,” said Ernest Cu, President and CEO of Globe Telecom.

Cu added, “This year, we are making significant investments in upgrading and expanding our networks. One tangible result of which is the commercial rollout of 4G for mobile, making us the first Philippine operator with a 4G mobile network in the country.”

The 4G HSPA+ roll out expands the foray of Globe into new and up-to-date network technologies to provide its subscribers with high-speed broadband access with the added convenience of full mobility. Other technologies in the 4G category include Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) and Long Term Evolution (LTE).

Globe joins campaign to power up 4M households in far-flung areas

Globe Telecom joins Ride for Light 2011 in the campaign to provide four million homes across
the country with safe, reliable and sustainable solar energy. The move is part of the company’s social
commitment to uplift the lives of marginalized sectors of the community and to help save the
environment by reducing carbon emissions.

An initiative of the Solar Energy Foundation (SEF), Ride for Light 2011 covers 6,600-
kilometers across Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao in just 19 days. It focuses on social and ecological
campaigns in approximately 40 remote communities all over the Philippines, with a strong emphasis
on various indigenous groups. Portable solar home systems will be donated to trusted social partners
in each village, who will connect the communities to the SEF network to give them access to electricity
on a sustainable basis.

As the official telecom partner, Globe is helping raise awareness and support for the advocacy
by providing mobile phones, Globe Prepaid Tattoo sticks, Globe prepaid SIM cards, and netbooks
which will enable the participants to give daily updates of their mission to the public through blogs and

Likewise, the company has set up a GCASH account for Ride for Light 2011 that will allow SEF
to receive donations via mobile phone with just a text message.

“We are very excited about this new donation option. Through GCASH, SEF will now be able
to reach out to and encourage more people to help alleviate poverty by making valuable donations
which will be used to provide solar energy to off-grid people throughout the Philippines. Every
hundred pesos they donate through GCASH can light one night for a family living without electricity,”
said Rock-Li Kim of Hybrid Social Solutions, the distribution of SEF in the Philippines.

At present, 26.4 percent of the country's population lives in rural, mountainous and farming
areas that lack access to electricity. Because of this, productive activity decreases or is brought to a
standstill when the sun goes down. Most households use kerosene, wood, and disposable batteries
to meet their basic energy needs, incurring high financial, health, and environmental costs in the
process. The use of solar energy and solar-powered products can change the lives of these off-grid
Filipinos by harnessing the sun's energy and empowering them to take control of their economic and
social development in the long run.

Globe joins list of Southeast Asia’s top companies Bags citations for investor relations, dividend policies

PRESS RELEASE

Globe joins list of Southeast Asia’s top companies
Bags citations for investor relations, dividend policies

Globe Telecom was recently recognized as of Southeast Asia’s top companies for its investor relations and dividend policies by the Institutional Investor Corporate Awards organized by institutional investment publication Alpha Southeast Asia.

Globe was lauded for Best Senior Management Investor Relations (IR) Support and Most Consistent Dividend Policy based on the results of the annual poll conducted by Alpha Southeast Asia, the first and only institutional investment magazine focused on Southeast Asia.

The poll was participated in by more than 450 investors and analysts across Southeast Asia, which included fund managers with investment interests in the region, large institutional investors, insurance companies, pension funds, funds of hedge funds, private banks, equity and fixed income brokers as well as buy and sell-side analysts. Other categories include Most Organized Investor Relations, Strongest Adherence to Corporate Governance and Poor Management Access and Investor Relations.

“Globe is one of Southeast Asia’s leading companies today. It has continuously raised the bar in corporate transparency, fair disclosure and good governance,” said Siddiq Bazarwala, Publisher of Alpha Southeast Asia.

Ernest Cu, President and CEO of Globe shared, “We are honored with this citation. This is a testament to our commitment in practicing good corporate governance and shareholder relations which significantly drives growth and sustainability of our business.”

In line with the company’s dividend policy of distributing between 75% to 90% of its 2010 net income, the Globe Board of Directors declared the first semi-annual cash dividend of P31 per common share, paid out to shareholders on March 18, 2011. On an annualized basis, the first semi-annual cash divided payment of P4.1-billion represents 84% of 2010 net income, similar to the previous year’s pay-out rate and translates to an attractive dividend yield of 7.8%, using end-2010 share prices.

Headquartered in Hong Kong, Alpha Southeast Asia has bureaus and correspondents in Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Singapore and Bangkok. The monthly magazine is the first and only institutional investment magazine primarily written for institutional investors, asset and fund management companies in Hong Kong, Singapore, other parts of Asia, US, Europe and the Middle East, who are usually not as exposed to the region as much as they are to North Asian economies. The magazine also has a strong following among the region’s largest local corporates concerned about liquidity management, cash flow maximization and financial supply chain optimization.

South-East Asia Japan Cable (SJC) System Consortium Contracts with SubCom and NEC as Suppliers

PRESS RELEASE

South-East Asia Japan Cable (SJC) System Consortium Contracts with SubCom and NEC as Suppliers

SINGAPORE – April 12, 2011 – The global consortium of telecommunications companies formed to build and operate the South-East Asia Japan Cable (SJC) system officially announces the start of the construction of the project that will link Brunei, China Mainland, Hong Kong, Philippines, Japan, and Singapore, with options to extend to Indonesia and Thailand. The SJC consortium has awarded the supply contract for the new international submarine cable system to two companies. First announced in December 2009, the cable was initially planned to be 8,300 km in length, linking 5 countries / territories. SJC’s length is now 8,900 km which could extend up to 10,700 km, linking up to 8 countries / territories while supporting an initial design capacity of over 15 terabits per second.

The SJC consortium is composed of Brunei International Gateway Sendirian Berhad (BIG), China Mobile, China Telecommunications Corporation (China Telecom), China Telecom (Hong Kong) International Ltd. (CTHKI, an Affiliate of China Telecommunications Corporation), Donghwa Telecom Co., Ltd., Globe Telecom, Inc., Google SJC Bermuda Ltd. (a subsidiary of Google Inc.), KDDI Corporation, Singapore Telecommunications Limited (SingTel), PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia International (Telin), Telemedia Pacific Inc. (TPI), and TOT Public Co., Ltd. (TOT). With the strength of the investors to the project, the SJC will bring more available bandwidth to Asia to support future applications and next-generation technologies.

Mr Ooi Seng Keat, Chairman of the SJC executive committee, said, “The SJC is carefully designed to serve as many direct circuits between the landing points/POPs and is routed nearer the Northern part of the Philippines, thereby avoiding an area that is frequently stricken by earthquakes. The SJC will enable members of the consortium to meet the growing demands of the region, not just for increased Internet usage, but bandwidth intensive applications such as Internet TV, games and enterprise data exchange.”

The SJC consortium signed an agreement with TE SubCom (SubCom) and NEC Corporation (NEC) to supply and install the system based on their decades of combined experience, technology superiority and extensive record of on-time and on-budget project completions. The SJC system is expected to be ready for service in 2H-2013.

“We are very pleased to have the opportunity to participate in the deployment of the SJC system and anticipate that, once completed, SJC will have a significant and measurable impact on bandwidth, enhancing how the entire region interacts and communicates with the rest of the world,” said Mike Rieger, vice president of sales for SubCom. “We thank each member of the SJC consortium for their trust and support and look forward to the completion of this landmark project utilizing SubCom’s state of the art advanced 40G SLTE and OADM Branching Units.”

“We congratulate the purchasers on this occasion and look forward to building the Southeast-Asia Japan Cable System,” said Mr. Osamu Harada, General Manager of Submarine Network Division at NEC. “We are very proud that with this new cable, we will be able to contribute to the economies of Asia and its vicinity. NEC will continue to dedicate its strength to the development of telecommunication infrastructure in these and other countries across the globe.”
