MANILA, Philippines – Businesses with major interests in Mindanao are among those who have confirmed attendance at a dialogue with the peace negotiating panel of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front in Manila Friday afternoon.

Among those in the confirmation list of the dialogue organizers are representatives of Alsons (Alcantara and Sons), which is into mining in Mindanao, and the group of companies of Victor Conjunji, known for its logging operations in the southern Philippines.

Rafael Alunan III, who was Interior secretary during the term of former President Fidel Ramos, is also in the list as representative of the Lopez Group Foundation Inc., along with Vicente Paterno, chairman of the Philippine Seven Corporation, which runs the Seven Eleven chair of groceries and convenience stores in the country.

Others in the list of confirmed guests are Jaime Aquino, chair and chief executive officer of Confac Global Group (CGG), Victor Rodriguez, chair of Marinducare Foundation, Inc., Felix Marinas Jr., president of the National Resources Development Corporation, and Ben Punongbayan, managing partner of the Punongbayan and Araullo Corporation.

MILF chief negotiator Mohagher Iqbal said they are optimistic about the outcome of the consultations with the businessmen, judging from similar activities they earlier held in Mindanao, although he acknowledged that the “businessmen in Manila are different and have distinct issues from those of Mindanao traders because the Mindanao businessmen also feel they are victims” of a perceived monopoly by some traders in Manila.

But Iqbal said if the traders in Manila are properly informed of the real issues surrounding the peace negotiations, the MILF would be able to muster support from them.
